Mountaineer Montessori School Students Art at Good News Mountaineer Garage Art Show to Benefit the Hawks Nest Project

APRIL 11, 2012 (Charleston, WV) – The public is invited to attend the Good News Garage for Artwalk on Thursday, April 19th from 5pm to 8pm in Charleston, West Virginia. The Good News Mountaineer Gallery, located at 221 1/2 Hale Street, will feature art from students at Mountaineer Montessori School for this month’s Artwalk.

The fourth, fifth and sixth grade art students at Mountaineer Montessori School have spent the last two months creating wood block prints, drawings, mosaics, paintings, and sculpture depicting the historic Hawks Nest Tunnel tragedy. The student’s work will be for sale and the proceeds will support the development of an educational component for the Hawks Nest Tunnel Project. The students were inspired by speaking with David Pushkin, an artist and filmmaker who visited the school in the spring and currently is producing a documentary film on the Tunnel.

The educational component will be comprised of historical facts, environmental research, art projects and social studies developed by the students themselves. This work will create a prototype for educational curriculum in eighth grade West Virginia Studies courses statewide. Your contribution can make a difference. All art purchases are tax deductible

Good News Mountaineer Garage is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization located at 221 1/2 Hale Street. The organization helps change the lives of West Virginia families by providing them a car so they can get to work or job training.

For  more information about this event contact the Mountaineer Montessori School at  (304) 342-7870 or by email atinfo@mountaineermontessori.org.

“There is a story buried deep within Hawks Nest mountain, and I’m honored to join David Pushkin and his team in their work to bring the truth to the surface.  The beauty of my home state and the agony of the Hawks Nest tunnel workers create a literary juxtaposition.  The time is right for this tale to be told.”

Today Evening Star Productions welcomes five new members to our Advisory Committee: Ronald W. English, John P. David, Betty Dotson-Lewis, Billy Joe Peyton and Gerald Markowitz. As scholars, writers, spiritual leaders, community organizers and native West Virginians they bring great knowledge, experience and energy to The Hawks Nest Tunnel. We extend our greatest thanks to them for joining our team.

Ronald W. English

Ronald W. English was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Charleston from 1972-1993. Under his leadership, First Baptist became a Charter Member of the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal, establishing low income housing in downtown Charleston. English also founded the Black Heritage Cultural Series in Charleston, which was the first such project funded by the WV Arts and Humanities Council.

Prior to serving at First Baptist, English was Assistant Minister to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. Rev. English offered the prayer at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in April, 1968 and has lectured and written on African- American history, particularly on the life and work of Dr. King. In 1990 English traveled to South Africa with a delegation of African American leaders invited by Bishop Desmond Tutu to advocate for the release of Nelson Mandela.

English has moderated and produced public affairs programs for commercial and public television and authored op-ed articles for local newspapers. Currently, he is a certified adult educator/trainer, consultant in Diversity Management, and lecturer at Wheeling Jesuit University.

John P. David

Her novels and articles capture the unique flavor of the mountains and people, through unedited stories rooted in oral history. Dotson-Lewis is the author of Appalachia; Spirit Triumphant (2004), Sago Mine Disaster; Appalachian Coalfield Stories (2007),The Sunny Side of Appalachia; Bluegrass from the Grassroots (2008), and the forthcoming novel Girl from Stretchneck Mountain. Her house is located just over the knoll from the original Martha White Farm, home of the first graves. She has also been writing about the history of Hawks Nest for over ten years, in newspapers, blogs and novels.

HAWKS NEST TUNNEL DOCUMENTARY EXPANDS CREW WITH MUSIC DIRECTORS

New York, New York -March 29, 2011 – Iron Bridge Pictures announced today that musicians Michael Lipton, Tristram Lozaw and Michael Pushkin have joined the crew of Hawks Nest Tunnel: A Documentary as musical directors.

Michael Lipton was born outside of New York and raised in Miami, FL,  Michael Lipton moved to a farm in rural Calhoun County in 1973. While there, he formed the band Big Money, which played around the mid-Atlantic for a decade. He also started the county’s first organized trash collection service, King Pin Trash Service.  He began freelancing for The Charleston Gazette in the mid-‘80s and, after his house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground, moved to Charleston.  He continued writing regular features, columns and reviews for the Gazette as well as becoming co-publisher and editor of the alternative newspaper Graffiti – which he edited until it was sold in 2005. In the late ‘80s, he began playing in the “Mountain Stage” house band and formed The Carpenter Ants, an R&B group which has been together for 23 years and twice traveled to Moscow.  Along the way he has toured with various bands, produced numerous CDs, scored three feature films, documentaries and shorts. Recently, he won an Edward R. Murrow Award and an Alfred l. duPont-Columbia University award for his music on Trey Kay’s radio documentary “The Great Textbook War.”

After selling Graffiti in 2005, Lipton founded the WV Music Hall of Fame. The WVMHoF has hosted three induction galas which were broadcast statewide on WV Public TV, collaborated with the WV Department of Education to create a Traveling Museum which has visited 120 schools in 54 counties throughout the state, designed a permanent exhibit at Tamarack, released two critically acclaimed CDs, and produced numerous displays and exhibits.

The WVMHoF’s current projects include making “The Film History of WV Music” and a Bill Withers tribute CD.

Tristram Lozaw is a musician who has played in bands since the sixth grade, Tristram Lozaw is a recent transplant from Boston, MA to Charleston, WV. He is currently Communications Director for the WV Attorney General’s Office, a position that includes producing audio and video projects for consumer education.

His resume as a musician runs from leading a rock group that opened for U2 on 43 dates in the 1980s to compositions for string quartet to performing at Lincoln Center as one of 200 guitarists for Rhys Chatham’s “A Crimson Grail,” released by Nonesuch Records in 2010. Lozaw’s love for music led to an adjunct career as music journalist (Boston Globe, MSNBC, YahooMusic) and publisher of the nationally respected magazine Boston Rock.

Lozaw’s film music credits include the PBS Frontline series “The Farmer’s Wife,” the indie short “Magic Carpet,” and Lisa Olivieri’s “Helen Keller Had It Easy.” He has also created music soundtracks with Charleston’s Michael Lipton, including music for Bob Wilkinson’s award-winning “Shades of Gray” (Seminal Films, DVD) and the NPR radio documentary “The Great Textbook War” produced by Trey Kay, for which he received Peabody, Edward R. Murrow, and Columbia Journalism School Awards. He has also worked crew on indie films and television.

As an audio engineer, Lozaw studied under renown audio guru David Moulton and has mixed, mastered, produced, restored, or “manipulated” recordings for dozens of artists and projects, including the all-star “Always Lift Him Up:  A Tribute to Blind Alfred Reed” CD. He worked on Rock Band “The Eighties” and produced radio advertising for K&L Sound, the Harvard Coop, and Boston Rock, among others.

Michael Pushkin is a songwriter from Charleston, West Virginia. He has performed throughout the State for over 20 years. His bands have included “Mike P and the Lower Case G’s”, “Head Salad” and the legendary Morgantown funk band, “Joint Chiefs”. He is currently in the band “600 lbs. of Sin”.

His songs are often outlets for his political beliefs, such as the title track to 600lbs of Sin’s latest EP, “29? , a dirge for the workers that were killed at the Upper Big Branch mine. Mike is active in the Charleston community as a political organizer and cultural pundit. He has helped organize political campaigns, musical fundraising events and protest rallies.

The documentary is expected to debut 2012 and is actively raising funds through www.kickstarter.com and through other sources.

ABOUT HAWKS NEST TUNNEL: A DOCUMENTARY

The film, with the working title, Hawks Nest Tunnel: A Documentary is an investigative documentary that digs deeply into the largely untold story of government and big business. It uncovers the voices and faces of West Virginians who were impacted by our nation’s largest industrial tragedy. This timely story honors the memory of those who lost their lives at work and tells a critically important moral tale of greed, corruption and big business so representative of our current times of economic hardship and government bailouts for corporations.
